Livestock Killed And Farms Damaged Following Naxxar Explosion
Birds, rabbits and dairy cows were among the animals killed following Monday morning’s explosion at the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory in Naxxar, according to the MaYA Foundation. The blast , which occurred at around 6:35am along Triq tal-Qagħdi, was heard across Malta and even in some localities in Gozo and caused damage in several surrounding areas. Speaking to MaltaToday , a spokesperson for the MaYA Foundation said a number of farmers and breeders in the area suffered structural damage to their properties, while several animals perished as a result of the explosion. “Several breeders in the area suffered structural damages to their farms, and some animals also perished due to the blast, including birds, rabbits, and dairy cows,” the spokesperson said. The foundation said it had been in contact with affected farmers and breeders since the incident and expressed solidarity with those impacted. While authorities confirmed that all workers at the fireworks facility were accounted for and no human casualties were reported, MaYA stressed that the effects of the explosion extended beyond immediate risks to people. The organisation noted that livestock losses, damage to farms and the stress caused by the blast had affected many families who depend on agriculture and animal breeding for their livelihoods. “For farmers and breeders, animals are not simply numbers. They represent years of dedication, daily care, emotional commitment, and in many cases, the livelihood of entire families,” the foundation said. MaYA has called on authorities to assess the damage suffered by farming families and provide the necessary support once the area is declared safe. Emergency services and authorities remain involved in the response and investigation into the explosion. Should fireworks factories face stricter safety measures? •
