Kano govt merges water, environment ministries
The Kano State Government has announced the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single entity. The new ministry will now be known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change. In a circular dated June 1, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the government said the decision was aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency, improving policy coordination, and optimizing resource utilization in the management of environmental and water-related matters across the state. According to the circular, the new ministry will operate through two directorates; the Directorate of Water Resources and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change. “Each will be headed by a Permanent Secretary, both reporting directly to the Honourable Commissioner,” the circular explained. It also said departments, agencies, and units under the former ministries have been directed to realign their operations and reporting structures with immediate effect. The circular further stated that additional guidelines on the transition will be communicated in due course. The directive was addressed to top government officials, including the Chief of Staff, Commissioners, the Head of Civil Service, and heads of parastatals, with a call for wide circulation and strict compliance. Daily Trust reports that since the resignation of water commissioner, Umar Haruna Doguwa, who later emerged as the state All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, his colleague in the ministry of Environment, Dahir M. Hashim, had been mandated to supervise it. Although the circular did not specify, but Hashim is predicted to keep being in charge of the newly merged ministry.
