Kano LG revokes private schools’ licenses after teacher allegedly rapes pupils
The Ungogo local government council of Kano State has revoked the licenses of all private schools within its jurisdiction following allegations that a teacher at one of the schools raped four female pupils. In a statement, the Education Councillor of the LG, Abdullahi Wakili, said the decision was taken after a review meeting aimed at improving school administration and addressing security and moral challenges in the area. He said the LG chairman, Tijjani Amiru Bilyaminu, directed that all private school owners must appear before a screening committee for fresh evaluation. The move comes in the wake of the closure of Al-Hadeed Private School in Inusawa, Ungogo, after one of its teachers, popularly known as Uncle Kamal, was accused of sexually abusing four underage female pupils, reportedly from the same family. The suspect has since been arraigned before a magistrate court in Kano’s Nomansland area on rape charges. The court ordered his remand in custody and adjourned the case to June 9, 2026. The LG authorities said the measure was necessary to restore confidence in private schools and ensure the safety of children. “Our schools must be safe havens, not places of fear,” Wakili said.
