Rescued Turtle Nathalia Found Dead In St Julian’s Months After Release

Nature Trust – FEE Malta has announced the heartbreaking death of Nathalia, a sea turtle that had spent months recovering at its wildlife rehabilitation centre before being released back into the sea last year. Volunteers were called to St Julian’s after reports of a dead turtle found in the area. After checking the animal’s microchip, rescuers confirmed it was Nathalia. The turtle first arrived at the rescue centre in April 2025 after suffering a severe propeller injury to her front left flipper, which required amputation. Despite the injury, Nathalia adapted well during rehabilitation and was eventually released back into the wild in December 2025. However, rescuers now fear she may have suffered another boat strike, this time fatal. A necropsy is expected to confirm the exact cause of death. In an emotional statement, the Wildlife Rescue Team said it was devastated by the news, writing: “Rest easy Nathalia, we’re sorry we humans have let you down.” The organisation also reminded the public that all rescued animals are protected species and encouraged anyone spotting injured wildlife to contact the Wildlife Rescue Team.
