Happy Pride! June Marks International Pride Month And The Legacy Of Stonewall

June has officially arrived, marking the beginning of International Pride Month, a global celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, its history, achievements and ongoing fight for equality. Pride Month is observed every June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, a series of protests that began on 28th June 1969 after police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. The demonstrations are widely regarded as a turning point in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and helped spark decades of activism across the world. Today, Pride Month is celebrated globally through marches, festivals, educational events and awareness campaigns that highlight LGBTQ+ voices and experiences while advocating for equality and inclusion. The month serves both as a celebration of progress made over the years and as a reminder that many LGBTQ+ people continue to face discrimination and barriers in different parts of the world. Malta has emerged as one of Europe’s leading countries on LGBTQ+ rights, consistently ranking highly on international equality indexes thanks to a series of legal reforms and protections introduced over the past decade. Throughout June, rainbow flags will once again be raised around the world as communities, organisations and allies come together to celebrate diversity, promote acceptance and honour the legacy of those who fought for LGBTQ+ rights. More than half a century after the Stonewall Uprising, June remains a symbol of both remembrance and pride for millions of people worldwide. Photo credits to Astromilkshakes on X •
