Petition Calls For Sandra Gauci To Be Given A Seat In Parliament
A petition calling for ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci to be granted a seat in Parliament has been launched, arguing that Malta’s current electoral system unfairly disadvantages candidates from smaller parties. The petition centres on the outcome of the 2026 general election and criticises the way parliamentary seats are allocated under Malta’s electoral framework, particularly in relation to the gender corrective mechanism. Supporters behind the petition argue that Gauci secured more public support than some candidates who ultimately entered Parliament through corrective mechanisms, yet remains excluded from the House of Representatives. In the 12th electoral district, Gauci received 513 first-count votes and eventually rose to 950 votes through subsequent counts. Petitioners claim this level of support should not be outweighed by mechanisms that result in candidates from the Labour Party and Nationalist Party entering Parliament despite receiving fewer votes. The petition describes the situation as a democratic imbalance that effectively penalises voters who choose candidates outside Malta’s two major political parties. Supporters are calling on Parliament and the Electoral Commission to reform the electoral system, arguing that every vote should carry equal weight regardless of which party a voter chooses to support. The campaign also questions whether the current system adequately reflects the will of voters who back alternative political movements, renewing a long-running debate about representation and electoral reform in Malta. Gauci led ADPD’s campaign during the 2026 general election, with the party once again failing to secure parliamentary representation despite obtaining thousands of votes nationwide. The petition is now urging authorities to review the current framework and ensure that smaller parties and independent candidates are not placed at a structural disadvantage when parliamentary seats are allocated. At the time of writing, the petition has acquired 1,368 signatures. Do you think Sandra should be allowed a seat in the Parliament? •
