Super Eagles draw 2-2 with Poland in international friendly

Three-time Africa champions Super Eagles of Nigeria were forced to a 2-2 draw by Poland in an international friendly match played on Wednesday in Warsaw, Poland Although neither team will be taking part in the 2026 World Cup which is a few days away, both Poland and Nigeria delivered an entertaining contest that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. The Super Eagles without their key players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze who recently buried his mother, dominated early proceedings but it was the hosts who would have gone in front had Zwaleski been clinical with his header. After fierce exchanges in search of the opening goal, it was the Super Eagles who drew the first blood when Terem Moffi tapped in from close range in the 25th minute after a fine cut-back by Moses Simon. However, Kacper Potulski equalised for his side in the second minute of first half added time for both sides to go into the dressing room on level terms. On resumption, Coach Eric Chelle made six tactical changes in almost all the departments bringing on new players to sustain the pressure on the opponents. Nine minutes into the half, substitute Paul Onuachu headed wide from close range after a measured pullout by fellow substitute Philip Otele. Few minutes later, another substitute Frank Onyedika had the opportunity to double the lead but failed to hit the target as he scooped the ball over the bar. At the other end, new entrant Zaidu Sanusi’s costly mistake provided the chance for Lewandowski to put his side ahead but the experienced striker was thwarted by Maduka Okoye who made himself big for the crucial save. Super Eagles’ pressure paid off in the final quarter of the match when a handball was committed, resulting into the penalty that was calmly converted by Onuachu in the 77th minute to restore Nigeria’s lead. Okoye still made an instinctive save off Lewandowski in the 81st minute to preserve the slim lead but the hosts found the breakthrough in added time when Przemyslaw Wisniewski scored a stunning goal to draw Poland level. The other friendly match between Poland and Nigeria on March 23, 2028, a pre-world Cup international friendly at the Stadio Miejski in Wroclaw ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.
