Omar Farrugia Set To Become Malta’s Youngest-Ever Minister

At just 31 years old, Omar Farrugia is set to make Maltese political history as the country’s youngest-ever minister. The Mqabba native has been entrusted with the Ministry for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme as part of Prime Minister Robert Abela’s new Cabinet. Farrugia’s political journey began in local government, where he was elected Mayor of Mqabba in 2019 at the age of just 24. Three years later, he successfully made the jump to national politics, securing a seat in Parliament from the 5th District during the 2022 general election. His rise through the ranks continued in January 2024 when he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, a role that marked his first position within the executive branch of government. Now, following last Saturday’s general election , Farrugia has been promoted to full ministerial rank, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the position in Malta. The appointment comes after a strong electoral showing on his home district, where he secured 2,028 first-preference votes on the 5th District. Farrugia’s promotion is one of the most notable features of the new Cabinet and signals a continued effort to bring younger faces into senior government roles. His portfolio will see him responsible for youth affairs, wellbeing initiatives and overseeing the implementation of the Labour Party’s electoral programme. •
