Occupy Justice Appeals For Footage After Daphne Memorial Is Cleared Again
Occupy Justice Malta is asking the public for help identifying the person or people who cleared the Daphne Caruana Galizia memorial in Valletta. In a Facebook post published yesterday, the activist group said a police report had already been filed following the incident, which saw items removed from the protest site at the Great Siege Monument. “Of course we made a police report about it,” Occupy Justice wrote, adding that the memorial had already been restored. The group said it was seeking photos or videos that may help identify those responsible, urging anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage to come forward and share it with activists or police. Occupy Justice also suggested that those behind the removal appeared increasingly emboldened, contrasting the latest incident with previous acts of vandalism carried out under the cover of darkness. The appeal comes days after footage emerged showing a man removing portraits of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia from the memorial on Monday afternoon, the same day Labour supporters gathered in Valletta to celebrate the party’s general election victory. Photos from the memorial were later found torn up in a nearby rubbish bin. The makeshift memorial, dedicated to Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated in a car bomb attack in 2017, has been repeatedly targeted over the years, with flowers, candles, banners and photographs frequently removed or damaged. Occupy Justice has maintained that the site will remain in place until justice is fully served. “Meanwhile, the protest remains there until justice is served,” the group said in its latest statement. The organisation is encouraging anyone with information, photographs or video footage related to the incident to come forward. Share to raise awareness! Photo credits to Occupy Justice Malta •
