‘I Felt Stupid’: Alleged Bank Scam Victims Testify In Court

Victims of an alleged €1 million bank scam continued testifying in court on Wednesday, describing the panic and regret they felt after losing thousands of euros through what appeared to be legitimate bank communications.

According to a report by Times of Malta , the case centres around Tammy Caruana, a 25-year-old woman from St Paul’s Bay accused of scamming around 200 people. She has pleaded not guilty.

Several victims described receiving SMS messages or phone calls appearing to come directly from their banks, warning them about suspicious activity on their accounts.

Many said they were then instructed to click on links or speak to a woman who sounded professional and convincing.

One victim lost nearly €15,000 after following instructions sent through a fake banking message.

Another victim told the court she “panicked” after nearly losing €5,000 in savings she described as “a miracle” to accumulate.

Others said the scammers used convincing tactics, including recording notices and warnings not to share security numbers aloud.

The case, presided over by Magistrate Laura Lanfranco, continues.

The prosecution is being led by AG lawyers Mauro Abela and Marica Ciantar, assisted by Police Inspector Claire Vella Borg.

Lawyers Roberto Spiteri and Franco Galea are appearing for the accused. Stefano Filletti and Maria Lisa Buttigieg are representing BOV and BNF, respectively.
