The Lower House on Thursday approved a
bill presented by Premier Giorgia Meloni's government paving the
way for Italy's return to nuclear power, with 155 votes in
favor, 86 against, and 8 abstentions.
Italy abandoned nuclear power following a referendum in the wake
of the Chernobyl disaster but the government plans to return to
atomic energy with small latest-generation reactors to reduce
reliance on imports and cut greenhouse gas emissions in view of
the climate crisis.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where the government expects
the legislation to get final approval before the summer recess
by the end of July.
In this way it will be possible for the related implementing
decrees can be issued by the end of the year.
