More than half of Americans say that the system of democracy is not working in their country, according to a new poll.
In the Quinnipiac University poll, 57 percent of respondents said they believe “the system of democracy in the United States” isn’t functioning, while 37 percent said they believe it is. Seven percent did not respond to the question or were unsure.
Twenty-one percent in the poll said they believe “democracy in the United States will end” sometime in their life, while 68 percent disagreed and 10 percent did not respond to the question or were unsure.
The Quinnipiac poll was released a month before the country commemorates its 250th anniversary, which will most likely be a celebration of American values including freedom and democracy itself.
However, in the Quinnipiac poll, 22 percent of respondents said they didn’t see themselves as “a proud American,” while 73 percent said the opposite. Five percent were unsure about whether they saw themself as a proud American or did not respond to the question.
The poll also comes at a time when Americans appear not to have confidence in their country’s leadership. President Trump’s approval rating was sitting at 39.5 percent on Thursday afternoon, according to a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, and his disapproval rating was sitting at 56.9 percent.
The Quinnipiac poll took place from May 14-18, featuring 1,316 people and a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
