President Trump’s net approval rating is down to its lowest point ever amid the Iran war and stubbornly high prices, according to a polling analysis.
The Economist has tracked public opinion about presidential job performance in its poll tracker since 2009, relying on data from YouGov surveys.
The outlet found that Trump’s net approval rating is at negative 25 percentage points, making him the most unpopular president ever in this polling tracker.
Trump’s sinking popularity comes amid ongoing discontent from Americans with rising energy rates resulting from the Iran war. The Trump administration is involved in ongoing negotiations with Tehran over a nuclear weapon agreement and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil trading corridor.
His job approval was lowest on the issue of inflation and prices, with a net rating of negative 43 percent, according to the Economist’s analysis. He has performed comparatively better on other issues, including jobs and the economy, foreign policy, immigration and crime.
The average price of gas in the U.S. was more than $4 per gallon on Thursday, up from around $3 a gallon at this time a year ago, according to AAA.
White House officials have characterized rising energy prices as short-term pains in exchange for long-term stability in the region.
Trump waved aside concerns about these hiked costs in May, telling reporters, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations” when it comes to talks with Tehran.
“I don’t think about anybody,” the president continued. “I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”
Some GOP lawmakers are becoming increasingly vocal critics of the war’s economic impacts. Four Republican lawmakers crossed party lines on Wednesday afternoon to approve a war powers resolution aimed at curtailing the Trump administration’s military operations against Iran.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday morning, the president criticized the House vote as “meaningless.”
“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote in the post.
