EXCLUSIVE: Deadline brought you news last month that HBO was recasting Ginny Weasley for Season 2 of the Harry Potter series. Now, we hear that another desirable role is up for grabs in the eagerly anticipated TV show.
Sources said Harry Potter casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann are out to agents as they search for a young actor to play Colin Creevey in Season 2. Auditions are underway, with talk of recalls among those hoping to land the role.
Creevey is a recurring character in six of J.K. Rowling‘s novels, meaning the Hogwarts student could become a fixture in the HBO series, which is aiming to adapt every book. Creevey first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and is frequently seen around the grounds of Hogwarts with a camera, fanboying over Potter himself.
Hugh Mitchell played Muggle-born Gryffindor wizard Creevey in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but the character did not return for the rest of the movie series. In the books, he appears in the fight against Dolores Umbridge’s regime and participates in the climactic Battle of Hogwarts.
Season 2 of Harry Potter is expected to begin filming in the UK in the fall. Recasting is ongoing for Ginny Weasley after Gracie Cochrane decided to exit the show. “Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” the family said in a statement.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is being released at Christmas. It is written and executive produced by showrunner Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films also executive produce the series, produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. It will air on HBO and be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
HBO declined to comment.
