Anna Faris Denies Shading Cameron Diaz With Lost in Translation Role

Anna Faris’ Son Jack, 13, Makes Rare Public Appearance at Scary Movie 6 Premiere

It's safe to say that speculation about Anna Faris' performance in Lost in Translation went a little overboard.

The actress finally cleared up the decades-old assumption that the Scary Movie actress based her role as a superficial actress named Kelly in the Sofia Coppola-directed 2003 film off of Cameron Diaz.

After host Josh Horowitz pointed out on the June 4 episode of his Happy Sad Confused podcast that "everyone assumed you were playing Cameron Diaz," Anna shared that she "was always a little annoyed with that accusation."

"It felt like it took a little something away from my flavor," she continued, "and because I had auditioned for it and earned it as that performance. I always felt, like, 'No, I'm not part of some grand, weird sabotage.'"

The House Bunny star went on to recall Cameron's 2021 appearance on her Anna Faris is Unqualified podcast, noting that it was a missed opportunity for her to clarify things directly with the Charlie's Angels actress.

"Cameron came on my podcast, because I had read in an article that she was, that her feelings were hurt," Anna said, "and then I never had the courage to ask Sofia to clarify it for me."

When Josh asked if Anna "cleared the air" Cameron during their time together, she confessed that they didn't discuss the controversy head-on.

"Only kind of," she confessed. "Maybe should we clear the air on this podcast."

"I only had 25 minutes with her," Anna added. "I didn't know if I should launch immediately into like, 'I'm really sorry that I...I wasn't doing that.'"

The Just Friends actress' candid comments come as she prepares for the release of her new film Scary Movie 6, the premiere of which she brought her 13-year-old son Jack—who she shares with ex-husband Chris Pratt—to in a rare mother-son appearance.

And having the support of her son means everything to Anna.

“Whenever my son—and he’s only done this a handful of times—but when he asks me for advice, or he reveals to me that he trusts me,” Anna told E! News last year, “I get sort of a flood of emotional gratitude and confirmation that I guess I'm doing something right.”
