Spain inflict Wiegman's heaviest England defeat as World Cup play-offs loom

Spain inflicted Sarina Wiegman's heaviest defeat as England manager as their 4-0 win in Mallorca edged the European champions towards dropping into the play-offs to reach next year's World Cup.

The Lionesses' hopes of topping Group A3 and automatically qualifying for Brazil next summer are now out of their own hands as Spain earned some semblance of revenge for their Euro 2025 final defeat in the most dominant performance Wiegman's England have faced in her near five-year tenure.

The scoreline did not flatter them. Spain cut England apart from the first whistle to the last while Wiegman's side, strong in attack on paper, could not muster up a single shot on goal across 90 minutes.

The tone was already set when Patricia Guijarro strolled through midfield and beat Hannah Hampton with a deflected 25-yard effort 19 minutes in. Her opener did nothing to jolt England into life and instead saw Spain only step up their early intensity and Alexia Putellas double their advantage with a rising effort shortly before the break.

Even a Wiegman half-time team talk did nothing to arrest the mismatch and Putellas removed any crumb of doubt about the result 11 minutes into the second half when she bundled home amid a defensive mess from England.

Had this been a boxing match, it would have been called off long before full-time but the Lionesses were left to endure a painful final half-hour where they continued to chase shadows and tried in vain to stem the tide.

England had already never lost a game by three or more goals under Wiegman but Spain continued to press for more chances to add a fourth before it came, with Guijarro firing against the bar from a corner.

But they could only resist further punishment for so long before substitute Claudia Pina finished smartly to leave Spain needing just to beat minnows Iceland to secure their place in Brazil, and condemn England to the play-offs.

Walsh: 'No solutions right now' to Spain thrashing

England captain Keira Walsh on ITV Sport:

"There were a lot of areas where we weren't good enough tonight and Spain were really good at home. They made it very difficult for us, but when we look back, there are a lot of things we could've done better.

"I think there's a lot of factors involved. I don't think we were good enough and they were very sharp. Those two combined made it a very difficult game for us.

"They've got bodies everywhere. It was difficult for us to get out of our own box. I don't have solutions right now. The emotions are very high. It's a disappointing game.

"We've still got a small chance to qualify. It's out of our hands. All we can try and do is win the next game and hope that Iceland can do us a favour. All we can do is control the next game."

Wiegman: I've never experienced this as England manager

England boss Sarina Wiegman speaking with ITV:

"A very difficult night. The difference between the two teams was big. Although we started well, when they got into a rhythm and got their first goal, I think we just didn't play to our strengths and they played really well. It's very disappointing.

"It has to do with a very good Spain tonight. It's never an excuse when you lose 4-0. We played to their strengths a little bit and harmed ourselves. We should've skipped players to get into the pockets. We didn't get there and when we did we found it really hard to keep the ball. It has to do with us and the strength of Spain.

"I don't want to use [match sharpness] as an excuse. Today, the facts are that Spain was a lot better than we were.

"It's really hard to see that and I felt that too. What we need to do now is stick together. We have one more game on Tuesday and show what we can do. These are always the hardest moments. I haven't had these moments with England either. We have to recover from this.

"Let's focus on our game and then let's see what Iceland can do. We need to step up again and play a good game."
