The Muslim Community of Oyo State has distanced itself from recent Sharia-related demands reportedly made by abductors of schoolchildren in the state, insisting that criminals and terrorists cannot speak for Islam or the Muslim faithful.
In a statement issued on Friday, the community condemned the use of religious rhetoric to justify kidnapping and other criminal activities, describing such actions as contrary to the teachings of Islam.
The statement, signed by the chairman of the Muslim Community of Oyo State, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni, and the Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade, said Islam strictly forbids kidnapping, terrorism and the extortion of innocent citizens.
