This year, we’re going to get Avengers: Doomsday, and next year, we’re going to get Avengers: Secret Wars. A lot of the plot is still being kept under wraps, but it’s pretty safe to assume these two movies will tell one singular cohesive story, similar to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But after Secret Wars, what’s going to happen next? \ We know a few things here and there. For example, we know a Blade movie is in development, as is Black Panther 3 . We also know there are a couple of other sequels being worked on as well. \ But beyond that, fans are being left in the dark. So, there’s nothing else to do except speculate. And one thing that I think is worth speculating over is whether the MCU will be rebooted after Secret Wars. \ The more I thought about it, the more I could see why it would make sense. Let’s talk about it. A Complete Reboot: The Reasons It Would Make Sense Getting Rid of the Multiverse Right now, there’s been a big emphasis on the multiverse within the MCU. You had Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness deal with multiverse shenanigans. There was an entire movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps take place in an alternate universe. \ However, it’s been years. Maybe Marvel figures that it’s time to move on from the multiverse altogether. We know definitively that “ The Multiverse Saga” ends with Secret Wars , but what does that mean exactly? The storyline could end, but the multiverse continues on, just with not as big an emphasis. However, there is another possibility. \ What if no more multiverse? One universe. One planet. A total reboot. All new characters. All new actors for existing characters. Everything completely new. It would be very interesting to see. That’s for sure. Actors Aging A lot of the original actors who are playing these beloved characters are getting older year after year. And maybe Marvel wants to look for young actors who can play the same characters for the next 20 years. \ Besides that, how long do these original actors want to continue playing the same characters? Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, do these actors and the others want to continue doing this for the next 10 years? What about 15 years? It’s natural for people to want to move on to other passions and projects. Sure, they could recast all of these characters, but if you recast everyone, you might as well just start fresh with a reboot. New Audience A third reason for this reboot idea making sense goes back to my previous point. It’s been almost 20 years since the MCU began. The people who were there in the beginning are now old. I’m not saying we’re all decrepit, but the younger generation wasn’t there to see its inception. They don’t have the same emotional connections to it. I have no evidence to back this up, but I’m starting to get the feeling that the MCU is not really catching on with the kids. It’s sort of becoming a “your parents’ franchise” type of thing. Collapsing In On Itself This is sort of repeating some of the points I already made, but I think it’s worth repeating. The MCU has been going on for almost 20 years. 37 movies. Let me type that in all caps to really emphasize it. 37 MCU MOVIES. And who knows how many TV shows and specials. \ It’s very impressive, and it’s never been done before. But, it does get to a point. Is it too much? Maybe. All that lore, legacy, and history must be heavy. It’s easy to collapse under all that pressure. It also makes it pretty damn hard for newcomers to become fans of this massive universe. I think people are smart enough to know they don’t have to watch every single MCU project to get caught up on the story. Still, it must be intimidating to know there are that many projects. \ Maybe it would be easier to start from scratch. Emphasis on easier. Learning From Past Mistakes I think it’s been pretty well-established that, in the beginning, Marvel did not have everything planned out perfectly. They were just feeling things out and hoping for the best. Sure, maybe they knew some of the things they wanted to do, but I don’t believe for a second that all the details were ironed out. \ This is the chance to redo it. Plan it out perfectly. Draw out what they want the story to be for the next 10 or 20 years. They also know things to look out for, backup plans, things to do and not do, etc. \ Plus, now, they have all the characters they didn’t have access to in the beginning. They can have Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, and the X-Men from the get-go. What Do I Think Will Happen? I like the concept of the MCU being rebooted, but I don’t know if I would like it if it actually happened. We’ve been with these specific characters and actors for 20 years. To see all that gone would be kind of sad. All that said, though, a whole new beginning does sound exciting. \ The truth is, I don’t think the MCU will be getting a full reboot, but I could see them doing a soft one. Maybe some actors say goodbye, and their characters get recast. Some characters, like the Fantastic Four and X-Men, are properly introduced to the main universe. I think there’s enough juice in this current iteration to keep it going, for now at least. \ Either way, I’m excited to see what the future of the MCU looks like, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next.
