Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has defended his decision to retain his parliamentary seat from Gozo, saying he wanted to honour the mandate given to him by Gozitan voters.
Speaking during an interview on NET FM a week after the general election, Borg said he could not “abandon” the district where his political career began.
“My political career started in Gozo,” Borg said, noting that he more than doubled his vote tally on the island compared to the previous election.
“The people of Gozo had the party leader on their ballot paper. I wanted to show them that I was not leaving them.”
Borg’s decision came after debate over which seat he would retain following his election from both the 12th and 13th districts. The PN ultimately determined that, as party leader, Borg was not bound by the same statute provisions that apply to other candidates, allowing him to keep the Gozo seat and relinquish the 12th District.
The PN leader said he sought guidance from the party’s statute guardian before taking the decision. Borg insisted that while he would continue strengthening the party’s presence in Gozo, work would continue across all districts.
He also reflected on the election result, acknowledging that the PN had wanted to win while arguing there were encouraging signs for the party. Borg pointed to increased support across all districts, a reduced gap between the two major parties and what he described as renewed enthusiasm among supporters.
According to Borg, around 800 people have applied to volunteer with the party since the election, while more than 1,000 suggestions have been submitted through feedback exercises.
Despite the defeat, Borg said he remains committed to leading the PN and described the project as a long-term one.
Borg also questioned Prime Minister Robert Abela’s decision to appoint Chris Fearne as Foreign Affairs Minister while criminal proceedings linked to the hospitals concession case are still ongoing.
While stressing that Fearne is innocent until proven guilty, Borg argued that having a minister facing criminal charges represent Malta internationally raised serious questions.
