Dwyane Wade Shares What Daughter Zaya Wade Has Taught Him About Fatherhood
When Dwyane Wade passes his 19-year-old daughter Zaya Wade the proverbial ball, he knows she'll run with it.
"I think we are constantly learning from Zaya," the retired NBA shooting guard told E! News in an exclusive interview at the second-annual ball for Translatable, the non-profit he launched to create a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth after his daughter came out as transgender. "I always talk about her courage. We all think we have courage until that moment presents."
While the athlete felt he was fairy tough, collecting three championships throughout his 16 seasons in the league, "Zaya has just shown us an incredible understanding of courage and what it looks like to feel safe and feel protected," he told E!, noting all the assists she's provided him and wife Gabrielle Union. "All the things that we all want and all strive for, that we all are working hard to find, to see her understand that she has it and to really blossom and bloom in it, it gives you hope."
It's one of the reasons the model has been so vocal about her gender identity.
"The positives of having such an inclusive platform completely outweigh all of the negativity online," she explained in a March 2023 interview with Dazed. "It has allowed me to let in the positivity and distribute it to all of the trans people in the world who need a voice and give them a platform to get inspired to live with themselves without being afraid."
And, of course, she's not the only famous face that's stepped up to share her truth.
Take Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber's 17-year-old daughter Kai Schreiber, who's confidently strutted down Paris Fashion Week runways and straight into the public discourse.
"Kai is such a fighter," her actor dad told Variety last year. "It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans,' and, 'Look at me.'"
She's just one of many stars claiming the spotlight. As we dive deeper into Pride month, allow them to share their stories.
