Labour Party candidates have started submitting their nominations for the upcoming casual elections, with eight parliamentary seats up for grabs following last weekend’s general election.
Candidates have until 10th June to file their nominations, while the casual elections are set to take place on 12th June.
The vacancies were created after several Labour MPs elected from multiple districts chose which seat to retain. Prime Minister Robert Abela will vacate his Second District seat, while Ian Borg, Michael Falzon, Miriam Dalli, Clyde Caruana, Clifton Grima, Jonathan Attard and Chris Fearne have also given up seats, triggering the electoral process.
Among those who have already submitted nominations are Clinton Domenic Azzopardi Flores and Jorge Grech for the Second District, Naomi Cachia for the Seventh District, Francesca Zarb for the Eleventh District and Vania Agius Tabone for the Eighth District.
The Ninth District, where two seats are vacant, has attracted the largest number of nominations so far, including Vania Agius Tabone, Clinton Domenic Azzopardi Flores, Miguel Balzan, Tania Borg, Lorna Borg Vassallo and Mariah Meli.
No nominations had been submitted by Saturday for the Third District seat vacated by Chris Fearne or the Twelfth District seat vacated by Jonathan Attard.
More nominations are expected in the coming days as the deadline approaches.
