Minister for Accommodation and Lands Owen Bonnici has criticised PN leadership contender Alex Borg over comments he made before entering the race to lead the Nationalist Party.
Speaking on TVM yesterday, Bonnici pointed to Borg’s previous remarks about introducing a “winning mentality” within the PN, arguing that they clash with attempts to portray recent electoral results as positive.
Before officially launching his leadership bid and going head-to-head with Adrian Delia, Borg had stressed that his objective was not simply to reduce the gap between the PN and the PL, but to actually win elections.
Using a football analogy, Borg said that “if we’re a football team and instead of losing 5-0, we lose 2-0, a loss is still a loss.”
Bonnici seized on those comments, questioning how Borg could maintain that position while also suggesting that the Nationalist Party’s performance in last week’s election should be viewed positively.
The exchange comes as the PN leadership race continues to gather momentum, with Borg and Delia presenting different visions for the party’s future following another electoral setback.
With leadership contenders under increasing scrutiny, comments made before the campaign officially kicked off are now becoming ammunition in Malta’s latest political battle.
What do you make of these comments?
