President Myriam Spiteri Debono today paid tribute to the four victims of Sette Giugno during a commemorative ceremony in Valletta.
The ceremony honoured the memory of Manuel Attard, Ġużeppi Bajada, Wenzu Dyer and Carmelo Abela, the four Maltese men who lost their lives during the historic events of 7th June 1919.
Sette Giugno remains one of the most significant dates in Malta’s history. The riots erupted as frustration mounted over rising food prices, economic hardship and British colonial rule.
As tensions escalated, British troops intervened, resulting in the deaths of the four protesters and leaving a lasting mark on Malta’s journey towards self-government.
During today’s ceremony, President Spiteri Debono laid a wreath beside the monument dedicated to the victims in St George’s Square, Valletta.
The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for greater representation and national rights, with Sette Giugno widely regarded as a pivotal moment in Malta’s constitutional history.
More than a century later, the four victims continue to be remembered as symbols of Malta’s struggle for self-determination.
