A major retrospective celebrating the life and work of Maltese artist Ġużeppi Briffa is set to open in Gozo later this month, bringing together more than 110 works spanning the artist’s prolific career.
Hosted at Il-Ħaġar | Heart of Gozo Museum in Victoria, Reluctant Modernism: The Art of Ġużeppi Briffa will explore the many facets of Briffa’s artistic legacy, from his church commissions and detailed drawings to his paintings and engagement with popular culture.
Curated by Dr Christian Attard, the exhibition is structured around six thematic sections and examines how Briffa’s work balanced traditional artistic expectations with a willingness to challenge visual conventions and established norms.
The exhibition forms part of the 29th edition of the Victoria International Arts Festival and will be inaugurated on 21st June at 11am.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore one of Malta’s most prolific artistic careers through a diverse collection that highlights both the breadth of Briffa’s output and the evolution of his creative vision.
Reluctant Modernism: The Art of Ġużeppi Briffa will run until 8th September at Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria. Admission is free.
