Jakarta (ANTARA) - Gaming and esports industry has evolved beyond entertainment and has the potential to become a key driver of Indonesia's creative economy, Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said.
"The Ministry of Creative Economy is not only focusing on talent, but on the entire ecosystem," he said in a statement on Sunday.
The ecosystem includes gamers, casters, communities, event organizers, media, and new professions emerging from the gaming subsector that create jobs and growth opportunities for Indonesia's younger generation.
According to Riefky, around 60 percent of Gen Z and millennials currently prefer jobs that align with their interests and passions.
He said the trend presents a major opportunity for the creative economy, particularly the gaming and esports sectors, to grow more rapidly in the coming years.
The government's support for the industry is reflected in the ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Creative Economy and the Indonesia Esports Association (IESPA).
The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen digital talent development, increase the economic value of the gaming industry, and expand opportunities for innovation among creative entrepreneurs.
The ministry also received the Best Government Agency Partner award at the 2026 IESPA National Assembly.
IESPA Chairman Ibnu Sulistyo Riza Pradipto said cooperation between the government and industry players is essential for building a healthy and sustainable esports ecosystem.
"We want IESPA not only to focus on developing athletes and professional players, but also on building the entire esports ecosystem. With stronger collaboration, we are optimistic that Indonesian esports can advance further and strengthen its regional and global presence," he said.
With growing support from the government, communities, and industry players, esports in Indonesia is no longer focused solely on competitive achievements.
The sector is increasingly being positioned as a pillar of the creative economy capable of creating business opportunities, generating jobs, and producing digital talent ready to compete globally.
