BirdLife Malta has joined environmental organisations and local communities in Albania in calling for the protection of two of the country’s most important natural sites: the Vjosa-Narta Lagoon and Sazan Island.
The conservation NGO highlighted the importance of the sites for wildlife across the Adriatic Flyway, describing them as crucial habitats for species including Dalmatian Pelicans, Greater Flamingos, Loggerhead Turtles and thousands of migratory birds.
BirdLife Malta said the wetlands and coastal habitats do not only support biodiversity but also play an important role for local communities through sustainable tourism, fisheries and other livelihoods.
Standing alongside its BirdLife partners in Albania, Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania and the Albanian Ornithological Society, the organisation stressed that protecting nature is a shared responsibility that extends beyond national borders.
“Nature knows no borders,” BirdLife Malta said, arguing that safeguarding Albania’s wetlands and coastal ecosystems also helps protect the birds, marine environments and natural heritage shared across the Mediterranean region.
The statement underlines the interconnected nature of migration routes, with many bird species travelling between countries including Malta and Albania throughout the year.
