There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in the Philippines.
The National Emergency Management Agency had been assessing the danger after the quake about noon (NZT).
The quake struck at a depth of 63km at Mindanao, NEMA said.
The USGS is reporting the quake at a magnitude 7.8. It had earlier been reported as 8.2.
"NEMA has assessed the information with the assistance of science advisors," the agency said in a statement.
"Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will affect New Zealand."
