MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani on Monday morning, killing at least three individuals, damaging buildings, disrupting classes and utility services, and triggering tsunami warnings.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic quake occurred at 7:37 a.m. It was initially recorded at magnitude 7.0.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani, at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Authorities in the Philippines and Indonesia urged residents in affected coastal areas to move to higher ground immediately following the offshore quake.

Phivolcs warned that the first tsunami waves could arrive between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. and may continue for several hours.
