A Canadian tourist is in hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain after a vicous assault in a Byron Bay park overnight.
Police were told the 28-year-old was drinking in Railway Park with a group of about five males he had just met, before they turned on him.
It is believed two of the group were teenagers, aged 16 or 17 years old.
The tourist fled into nearby bushland and flagged down passing police on Butler Street at about 11.40pm.
Officers performed first aid on the man before taking him to the Byron Bay Hospital.
He was later transferred to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police believe the 28-year-old had only arrived in the popular northern NSW tourist destination the previous day.
