At least 10 people have died after a boat carrying refugees and migrants capsized in waters near Malta.
According to the Italian Coast Guard, a fishing vessel rescued 48 people after the boat overturned around 45 nautical miles east-southeast of Malta. The vessel is believed to have departed from Libya.
Italian authorities said a patrol boat was immediately dispatched to the area and has so far recovered 10 bodies.
Search and rescue operations are continuing under the coordination of Maltese authorities.
The incident is the latest tragedy in the Mediterranean, one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 990 refugees and migrants have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean so far this year. More than 2,100 people died or went missing in 2025.
The latest shipwreck comes as European countries continue debating migration policies and new proposals aimed at deporting rejected asylum seekers to third countries.
