Vintage bicycles will once again take to the roads of Budens on Sunday, June 14 as the parish hosts the 11th edition of its popular Vintage Bicycle Ride.
Organised by the Junta de Freguesia de Budens (parish council), the annual event has become a fixture on the local calendar, attracting participants from across the region for a day of cycling, socialising and celebrating local heritage.
The ride will begin at 9.30am outside Budens School and follow an 11-kilometre route through some of the parish’s most emblematic locations, including Vale de Boi and Boca do Rio Beach, before returning to Budens.
According to organisers, the initiative is more than a bike ride and is designed to celebrate local history, traditions and community identity. Many of the bicycles on display have been carefully preserved by their owners, helping to recreate a nostalgic atmosphere that links past and present.
The day will conclude with a communal lunch and traditional dance, offering participants, families and visitors an opportunity to continue the festivities together.
Registration is open until June 10 and is available for both the bicycle ride and lunch, or for the lunch only.
Budens Parish Council president Ana Custódio said the event plays an important role in preserving a long-standing local tradition.
“When we took office, we immediately recognised the importance of this ride for our community and made it a priority to ensure its continuity,” she said. “It is a well-established event with its own history and has become part of the parish’s identity.”
Custódio added that events with such longevity help showcase the area to a wider audience.
“Initiatives like this help put Budens on the map. We welcome participants from different places, showcase our landscapes, encourage social interaction and strengthen local pride. They are important for keeping our traditions alive and valuing our community,” she said.
The event is organised with support from Vila do Bispo municipal council, the Sociedade Recreativa de Barão de São Miguel and the Rodas de Viriato group.
Over its eleven editions, the Vintage Bicycle Ride has become one of the parish’s most cherished events, bringing together different generations around a shared passion while helping promote Budens, its traditions and its hospitality, organisers add.
Budens, a small village bordering the national EN125 road, is part of the municipality of Vila do Bispo.
