A section of Portimão’s riverfront is being turned into an urban beach once more in the second edition of Ribeirinha Beach.
Now in its second edition, the event recreates a beach environment in one of Portimão’s most emblematic public spaces, offering a welcoming setting designed to bring the local community together.
Running until June 21 near the Clube Naval de Portimão (nautical club), the initiative is organised by the POIS association – also responsible for hosting the town’s popular InDireita festival, which for one day turns the town’s Rua Direita street into a bustling open-air market and fair.
According to organisers, the Ribeirinha Beach project was created to enhance the riverside area and provide new reasons for people to spend time in the city centre. It also seeks to strengthen Portimão’s connection to the river while highlighting the city’s cultural heritage and local identity.
Between 5pm and 10pm each day, visitors can enjoy a varied programme of cultural and recreational activities. The schedule includes live music performances, themed concert nights, dance and martial arts sessions, arts and crafts workshops for children, astronomy activities and creative upcycling workshops focusing on clothing and furniture. Among the artists scheduled to perform are Bandua, 800 Gondomar, Naomi Falcon and Sambambas.
The programme will also feature a sunset cocktail party and a series of open workshops designed to introduce the community to the work of the POIS association and its initiatives across the city.
Organisers say the project represents more than a temporary installation, reflecting a broader vision for Portimão that values local knowledge, promotes alternative forms of tourism and places greater emphasis on heritage, culture and everyday urban life.
Supported by Portimão municipal council, the initiative also aims to contribute to a more creative and environmentally conscious city by encouraging people to make greater use of public spaces.
