Maltese photographer Justine Ellul recently documented a unique collaboration between Swedish pop icon Robyn and Amsterdam FEMME+ rave collective Freï, where she works as the collective’s resident photographer.
The one night only event, Freï Invites Robyn, took place at Nachbar in Amsterdam on 31st May and was co-curated by Robyn during her Amsterdam run as an opening act for Harry Styles.
The collaboration came about after Robyn’s team approached Freï to create a celebration of local queer dance culture. The collective is known for centring FLINTA+ artists and communities within Amsterdam’s nightlife scene.
As Freï’s in-house photographer, Ellul was tasked with documenting the evening, capturing a rare meeting between an internationally acclaimed artist and one of Amsterdam’s most influential emerging queer nightlife collectives.
Speaking about the experience, Ellul described Robyn as “very humble”, saying the singer personally thanked everyone involved in the event.
“She felt like everyone’s bestie,” Ellul said. “She even posed for me when I asked her to. I was nervous she would feel like I’m another paparazzi taking advantage, which is not the case. I just wanted to get the portrait of this queen.”
The event also shone a spotlight on the growing visibility of femme-led spaces within Amsterdam’s club culture, with Ellul there to document every moment.
