Matteo Berrettini will be fit to play
Wimbledon, the injury-dogged 2021 finalist said Monday after he
retired hurt in the French Open quarter-finals against
countryman Matteo Arnaldini last week.
The 30-year-old Roman, who had been as high as number six in the
world in January 2022 but who has tumbled down the rankings to
100 amid a litany of injuries, said the hip issue that forced
him to pull out in the second set against Arnaldi at Roland
Garros had turned out to be a minor niggle.
Berrettini, who lost to Serb GOAT Novak Djokovic in the final in
south west London five years ago, said:
"I leave Paris with a smile on my face thanks to the fantastic
matches I played and because the tests carried out in the last
few days have not revealed any significant muscle injuries.
"I have already begun rehabilitation with the goal of arriving
at Wimbledon in the best possible shape.
"Over these two weeks, and especially since my withdrawal, I
have felt an outpouring of love and support that has made me
feel once again grateful and fortunate to have such a fantastic
family, team, friends, and fans by my side."
Berrettini is a grass-court specialist.
