MGRM has strongly condemned comments made by PN MP Conrad Borg Manché during a recent interview published by MaltaToday.
In a detailed statement shared online, MGRM said Borg Manché’s remarks “betray a fundamental misunderstanding of why Pride exists,” insisting that “Pride is, and must always remain, fundamentally political.”
The organisation rejected claims that MGRM agreed with the MP’s views, stating: “We do not, and have never, agreed with any statements that undermine, diminish, or oppose Pride initiatives.”
MGRM also argued that despite Malta’s strong LGBTQ legislative framework, discrimination and fear still remain present in daily life. The organisation cited figures from the EU Fundamental Rights Agency survey, including that 59% of LGBTQ individuals in Malta reported experiencing harassment in the year before the survey.
The statement also criticised rhetoric suggesting LGBTQ expression should be limited to nightlife spaces, while warning against “homophobia or legislative backtracking.”
MGRM concluded by calling for “an official statement and clarification” from the Nationalist Party leadership regarding Borg Manché’s remarks and the party’s official stance.
