Rua 80, the Algarve’s long-running radio show dedicated to all things 1980s, is celebrating its 15th anniversary by unleashing a summer-long invasion of nostalgia across the region.
The Rua 80 – 15 Years Tour promises 23 themed parties between June and September, transforming village squares, gardens and cultural venues throughout the Algarve into open-air time machines where the music never progressed beyond 1989.
At the controls will be DJ Nuno Silva, the man responsible for keeping the spirit of the 1980s alive in the Algarve for the past decade and a half.
The tour kicked off last weekend in Alte and is now set to zigzag across eight Algarve municipalities, from beach resorts such as Armação de Pêra, Monte Gordo and Quarteira to quieter inland communities.
According to Silva, the parties are about far more than simply playing old songs.
“When we hear those tracks, everyone has a story to tell,” he says. “We want the whole Algarve to feel part of this celebration.”
Founded 15 years ago, Rua 80 has evolved from a radio programme on Rua FM into a recognised entertainment brand centred on 1980s music and culture. It is now one of the Algarve’s most established organisers of themed summer events.
