
MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered its Regional Franchising and Regulatory Offices (RFROs) to conduct structural integrity inspection of public transportation hubs in areas affected by the deadly earthquake in Mindanao on Monday morning.
LTFRB Chairperson Atty. Vigor Mendoza II said the heads of the RFROs in Davao Region and Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City) were instructed to coordinate with the local government units, through the Department of Public Works and Highways, to inspect the transport hubs in the areas.

“We want to ensure the safety of both the passengers and our partners in the PUV [public utility vehicle] sector through a thorough inspection on the structural integrity of bus terminals and other land transportation hubs,” Mendoza said on Tuesday.

“The earthquake was so strong and with the Phivolcs [Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology] warning of more aftershocks, we just want to ensure that everybody is safe for worst-case scenarios,” he added.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani at 7:37 a.m., with tsunami warnings issued in the Philippines but were later on lifted.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported 37 deaths as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, but subject to validation.
Mendoza also ordered the RFROs to check on the safety and well-being of the personnel after the incident. He said that he also suspended the operation of their offices in badly-affected areas.

“On my part as the LTFRB chairman, I assure all our personnel of all the necessary assistance if you need them. We are one with you in this time of challenge,” Mendoza said. /gsg

HELP MINDANAO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
The Inquirer Foundation is calling for support for communities devastated by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao.
In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, the foundation is amplifying appeals for food, clean water and other critical assistance for affected families.

The Philippine Red Cross has activated its emergency fund campaign and deployed teams on the ground to provide medical services, distribute relief goods and extend psychosocial support to affected families.
