Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Finance Ministry has officially unsealed the Tiffany & Co. boutique at Plaza Indonesia in Jakarta after the luxury jeweler pledged to settle nearly Rp97.49 billion (around US$5.36 million) in unpaid customs duties, taxes, and administrative fines.
"The party concerned has committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations," Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Monday (June 8), noting that the company has agreed to pay the full amount, including administrative sanctions.
The Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) had earlier sealed three of the brand’s prominent in Jakarta located at Plaza Senayan, Plaza Indonesia and Pacific Place following alleged customs violations.
The measure was taken after a customs audit revealed that Tiffany & Co. had imported luxury goods without proper declaration and had not fulfilled its customs obligations.
The financial breakdown of the government's determination letter outlines heavy penalties for the non-compliance, including Rp78.50 billion (around US$4.32 million) administrative fines and sanctions as well as Rp18.99 billion (around US$1.05 million) unpaid taxes covering import duties, VAT and income tax.
Purbaya said the company's commitment to settle its obligation and comply with regulations had allowed the government to reopen its outlets in stages.
He reiterated that the government's supervisory role is aimed at ensuring compliance, transparency and accountability, while creating a level playing field for all domestic commerce.
"The government will continue to consistently carry out supervision while simultaneously encouraging all business actors to comply with statutory provisions," Purbaya said.
The Minister added that regulatory compliance was essential to ensure a competitive and healthy business ecosystem that supports the broader national economy.
The enforcement action highlights Indonesia's stronger scrutiny of the luxury retail sector, emphasizing that high-end global brands must comply with domestic customs and tax regulations.
