Power outage cuts water supply, disrupts lifts for 3,000 residents for 24 hours

About 3,000 residents at a Tsuen Wan housing estate were left without water and with disrupted lift services for more than 24 hours after a power outage, with electricity only gradually restored around noon on Tuesday.

The outage struck Phase 1 of Tsuen Wan Centre on Monday morning, affecting about 1,000 households across five blocks and a care home for people with disabilities.

Lawmaker Jody Kwok Fu-yung said that power and water supplies to the affected households were gradually restored by noon.

“The number of people affected is very large, roughly 3,000 to 4,000 residents from about 1,000 households. The lack of electricity in the sweltering heat has a severe impact, with not only the absence of electricity and lift service, but also no water,” she said.

“With no lift operating, it is very difficult for many elderly people, including those living alone, to get around.

“Our volunteers were on site assisting them up and down the stairs, escorting them to go home and delivering supplies such as meals and water.”
