Roderick Cassar, who is serving a 40-year prison sentence for the femicide of his wife Bernice Cassar, has been handed an additional 11 months in prison for domestic violence offences committed before her murder.
According to a Times of Malta report from today’s court sitting, Magistrate Lara Lanfranco delivered rulings in three domestic violence cases linked to incidents reported by Bernice in 2022.
Cassar received a three-month prison sentence over a Mother’s Day incident on 8th May 2022, during which he held a knife to Bernice’s throat. He was also sentenced to eight months in prison for threatening to kill her during an argument on 14th July 2022.
He was acquitted in relation to a third case concerning an incident that allegedly occurred on 31st May 2022.
Cassar was sentenced to 40 years in prison last year after admitting to the murder of Bernice, whom he shot dead on her way to work in Corradino on 22nd November 2022.
A public inquiry later found that the state had failed to adequately protect Bernice despite multiple reports and warning signs in the months leading up to her murder.
