Jack Schlossberg Reveals Mom Caroline Kennedy's Reaction to 'Love Story' Show

Grace Gummer sees where Jack Schlossberg is coming from.

After the grandson of President John F. Kennedy and Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis criticized Ryan Murphy's Love Story—including Grace’s portrayal of his mother Caroline Kennedy—the actress empathized with his take.

“All I can say is, I really can’t imagine what it’s like to see your life portrayed onscreen,” Grace told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published June 6. “My goal was to play her with honesty and compassion and delicacy. I have an immense amount of respect for her.”

Though Grace noted that no one in the Kennedy family has reached out to her directly, if she ever had the chance to meet with Caroline, she’d simply “let her speak.”

Nearly two months earlier, Jack shared that though he and his mother didn’t watch the series—which follows the romance of Caroline’s late brother John F. Kennedy Jr. and wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy—in full, he did show Caroline a snippet of Grace's performance.

“I showed her a clip of her,” Jack shared on the April 15 episode of Next Question With Katie Couric, “and we were laughing so hard.”

“The person was freaking out,” he recalled about the scene, “and we're just laughing so hard as if that's how my mom acts.”

While the Kennedys may not have been pleased with the series, Grace’s family—including parents Meryl Streep and Don Gummer—couldn’t have been more proud of her performance.

“My whole family called me crying—each individually,” she added to The Hollywood Reporter of their reactions to the finale. “They all had something wonderful to say about my performance, so that was really lovely.”

And they’re not the only ones. After all, Grace’s standout performance has placed her among the frontrunners for early Emmy predictions, according to the outlet.

“I’m very lucky,” she explained. “I think that my work speaks for itself, and the fact that it’s stirred up this emotion and elicited this feeling in people’s hearts around the world—I  mean, that’s my job as an artist.”

“So if I’m doing that, then I feel like I’m doing something right,” she added. “I’m proud of myself.”
