Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that the first Cabinet decision of the new legislature will be to begin the process of removing a substantial stretch of agricultural land in Wied iż-Żrinġ, near the Bulebel industrial area, from Malta’s development zone.
In a statement, Abela said the move will provide long-term environmental protection to the farmland and safeguard it from future development.
The area in question lies adjacent to the Bulebel industrial estate and has long been the subject of calls for stronger protection from residents, farmers and environmental advocates.
Abela thanked the farmers working the land, local heritage organisation Wirt iż-Żejtun and the Żejtun Local Council for their efforts in helping bring about the decision.
The Prime Minister said the move reflects the government’s commitment to putting people first while balancing development with environmental protection.
The process to formally remove the land from the development zone is now expected to begin in the coming months.
