Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty to Murdering Parents Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner
Nick Reiner is pursuing funds he believes are owed to him.
The son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner has filed a petition to access the million-dollar trust fund his parents set up for him to help cover legal costs as he remains in custody for the charges of their murders, for which he has pleaded not guilty.
In documents filed June 8 and obtained by E! News, the 32-year-old requested a portion of his trust be given to him, claiming his parents left “unambiguous instructions” that part of the fund was to be paid out to him once he turned 30.
“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,” the petition reads. “But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation. Like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent, and he is entitled to mount his defense with the resources that are lawfully his own.”
The trust petition estimates “more than $1.5 million” is available to Nick in assets, part of which was supposed to be paid out when he turned 30 with access to the rest of the money granted to him when he turned 35. Elsewhere, the petition alleges that the attorney overseeing his trust, Paul R. Kanin, has given a “shifting series of excuses and justifications” to deny him the money and requested that the entirety of his trust be paid out to him now for legal fees and funding his commissary account.
E! News has reached out to Kanin but has not yet heard back.

Elsewhere in the filing, Nick’s legal team notes that his former attorney Alan Jackson had left the case because Nick’s trustee was not able to pay him. While the Being Charlie writer’s family—including siblings Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28—had initially agreed to pay for Jackson, “the anticipating funding did not materialize” and the attorney withdrew from the case.
The attorney added a declaration in the filing, however, that notes his firm was “ready willing and able” to represent Nick if the funds are made available.
Originally, Jackson did not share the reason he left Nick’s case at the time of his January withdrawal.
“My team—me personally and my team—remain completely and utterly committed to Nick's best interest,” the criminal defense lawyer—who has previously represented Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein and Karen Read—said during an appearance on Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa in January. “We always will be committed to his best interests. I want nothing but the best for him and I want him to get the most robust defense that he possibly can get.”
Despite his withdrawal, Jackson has maintained that his former client is not guilty of murder.
After Jackson’s departure from the case, Nick’s family told E! News in a statement that they “have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.”
