The Algarve capital of Faro is preparing to host the sixth Algarve LGBTIQ+ Pride March, scheduled for Saturday, June 20.
Organisers are inviting members of the LGBTIQ+ community, allies, families and supporters to take part in the annual event, which combines a public march with an afternoon and evening of performances, music and community activities.
The programme begins at 3pm with participants gathering at Faro’s Liceu secondary school before the march sets off at 4pm, heading down Avenida 5 de Outubro.
A stop is planned at Largo da Pontinha at 5pm, before celebrations continue at Faro’s old brewery Fábrica da Cerveja – currently facing an uncertain future – between 6pm and 10pm. Entry to the event is free.
The post-march programme will feature DJs, drag performances, dancers, artists, a flea market, food trucks and community activities.
Performers scheduled to appear include DJ DYEZY, DJ VNHQ, Bebeh René, Sali del Vall, Loucas, Prestige and LOFT!, alongside a range of local exhibitors and food trucks.
Organisers say this year’s event takes place against a backdrop of growing concerns over discrimination and hostility towards LGBTIQ+ people in various parts of the world.
“That is why we continue to hit the streets: to celebrate who we are, affirm our existence and defend a society where everyone can live with dignity, respect and safety,” organisers say.
Families and people of all ages are welcome to attend.
The event is organised by MAPS Algarve, Werk Room Faro, Plataforma.Transparente, Associação Xis and the Associação para o Planeamento da Família.
