JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A Louisiana man was attacked by an alligator while allegedly fleeing law enforcement in an intoxicated driving investigation on Monday.
According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish. LSP officials said the vehicle had also reportedly struck a concrete barrier and experienced a tire blowout.
Troopers conducted a traffic stop on the Supra as it was traveling south on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish. LSP officials said 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz was identified as the driver and was allegedly showing signs of impairment. Rivas allegedly ran away and jumped from the elevated portion of the interstate into the swamp below.
The troopers began searching for Rivas, who was reportedly found walking along Highway 61. When law enforcement approached, he allegedly fled into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and sustained injuries to both arms. Despite his injuries, Rivas allegedly continued to flee before being found again.
Rivas was transported to a local hospital for treatment. LSP officials said he is charged with driving while intoxicated and resisting an officer. Additional warrants were obtained, accusing him of hit and run and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
