Vice President Vance reportedly has a new side gig, with the second family getting a chicken coop installed at its Naval Observatory residence.
Dozens of chicks are reportedly now living in a coop designed to look like the Victorian home at the Naval Observatory.
The Daily Wire first reported Sunday that Carolina Coops, a family-owned business founded by Matt and Gnon DuBoise in 2008, built the coop. The company is based in Creedmoor, N.C., outside the state capital of Raleigh.
Matt DuBoise told The Associated Press (AP) that his company completed the coop on May 29. The AP reported the company did not receive any taxpayer money.
“It’s something I thought was amazing to do for this country,” Matthew DuBoise told the AP. “It’s a place of history and a place of significance.”
The Naval Observatory is located in northwest Washington and has been the vice presidential residence since former Vice President Walter Mondale moved in there in 1977.
With their new coop, the Vances joined the millions of American households with backyard chickens. A 2025 survey by the American Pet Products Association found that 11 million households in the country have backyard chickens, according to the AP.
Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, have three children together, with a fourth child due in July. On the campaign trail in 2024, the vice president joked that his two sons eat “about 14 eggs every single morning.”
Matt DuBoise told the AP that the new coop recreated the residence’s round turret and green trim. He said he oversaw its installation and gave advice to the Vances.
“I couldn’t have been happier to see that excitement,” DuBoise said, referring to the family’s reaction to seeing the coop. “They’re just very, very happy, and I’m glad.”
