The Italian Catholic Church needs to

take action to "guarantee the presence of women in roles of

authority and leadership", the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI)

said in a document endorsing the recommendations of the recent

Synod.

"The leadership of Christian communities needs to be rethought,

given the still monocratic, clerical forms of authority," it

said, calling for Christian communities to have greater

"co-responsibility" between priests and the laity.

The document also expressed openness to the possibility of both

women and men having new baptismal ministries.
