
MANILA, Philippines — Mayon Volcano in Albay remains under Alert Level 3 which signifies intensified unrest as it had 24 volcanic earthquakes and other seismic activities in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday.
Phivolcs said that entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains prohibited.
Flights are also prohibitied in the vicnity of the volcano.

Phivolcs also reminded nearby residents of possible hazards such as rockfalls, ballistic fragments, lava flows, PDCs, moderate-sized explosions, and lahars during heavy rainfall.

In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin, Phivolcs said that aside from the volcanic earthquakes, the volcano logged eight volcanic tremors which lasted for one to 23 minutes, 362 rockfalls, and four pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals.
Lava effusion with lava flow were obsewrved on the gullies of Basud (3.8 kilometers), Bonga (3.23 km), and Mi-isi (1.8 km), with episodic minor strombolian activity.
It added that the crater glow of the volcano remained visible to the naked eye.
Phivolcs also said that the volcano released 1,600 tons of sulfur dioxide on Friday and generated a plume which rose 750 meters above the crater and drifted southwest, west, and west-northwestward.

Friday’s sulfur dioxide emission was slightly less than Thursday’s emission of 2,013 tons.

As the volcano remained under Alert Level 3, which signifies intensified unrest, Phivolcs still prohibits entry into six-kilometer radius or permanent danger zone.
Flights are also prohibitied in the vicnity of the volcano.
