CEBU CITY, Philippines — While brass bands and official ceremonies marked the country’s 128th Independence Day across Cebu City, a different kind of patriotism unfolded a few blocks away. Under the growing heat of the midmorning sun, weathered hands clasped one another around Freedom Park in Carbon Public Market.
