Mexico City (ANTARA) - Indonesian Ambassador to Mexico, Toferry Primanda Soetikno, stated that the economic relationship between Indonesia and Mexico has enormous potential for continued growth.
"Currently, the value of trade between the two countries has reached US$4.6 billion, and Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of US$2.8 billion," Soetikno said in Mexico City on Friday local time.
Although the figure is relatively large, Soetikno continued, the potential is much greater.
"Mexico is currently in trade negotiations with the United States, and a decision will be made by July 2026," said the Ambassador, who began his assignment in Mexico seven months ago.
He hopes the outcome of the negotiations will have a positive impact on Indonesia, creating greater market opportunities.
According to him, the free trade relationship between Mexico and Canada also presents an opportunity for Indonesia to market its products more widely.
"Mexico can become a gateway for trade of Indonesian products to countries in North, Central, and South America," Soetikno said.
Geopolitical disruptions in global economic relations have also created new opportunities for Indonesian products.
Due to the geopolitical situation impacting certain countries, Soetikno said many Mexican businesses are seeking alternative suppliers, which also presents another opportunity for Indonesia.
Several commodities, such as wood, plastic goods, and even medical equipment, are in high demand in the Mexican market.
Furthermore, Mexico is the third-largest export market for Indonesian-made cars.
"Currently, we often see several familiar Indonesian car products on the roads in Mexico," he said.
Indonesian tourism also has a significant opportunity to reach the large Mexican tourist market. He said many Mexicans who usually vacation in Europe are now seeking new destinations and experiences.
According to Soetikno, Mexico's strong interest in many culture aspects presents an opportunity for Indonesia, which boasts a rich cultural heritage in several regions.
The Indonesian Embassy in Mexico continues to promote Indonesian products and culture through various initiatives. The efforts include holding an Indonesian Festival, opening an Indonesian Cultural Center within the embassy complex, and participating in promotional events in Mexico.
